Jose Mourinho reveals why Tottenham did not sign Willian in the summer
Ahead of Tottenham’s Premier League contest against Arsenal on Sunday, manager Jose Mourinho has admitted that the club didn’t pursue the signing of Willian as they couldn’t compete with the Gunners over his wages. (h/t Express)
Willian was available on a free transfer this past summer after his contract with our London rivals Chelsea had run out. A move to Tottenham was strongly mooted, owing to the Brazilian’s past connections with Mourinho. (h/t Football.london)
However, the Gunners snapped up his signing. Mourinho, who insists that the Brazilian is a good friend, has now revealed that Tottenham didn’t waste time on the pursuit of the ex-Chelsea star due to his wages. (h/t Express)
“Willian is my friend and of course he is a very good player. He is still dangerous, he is still one of the best players in the Premier League. But we don’t have money for Willian. We cannot pay the wages that he gets at Arsenal so I didn’t want to waste our time because we cannot pay these wages.”
Since moving to Arsenal, the 32-year-old Willian hasn’t exactly set the stage on fire. In 13 appearances across all competitions, he is yet to score a goal but does have three assists. (h/t Transfermarkt)
