Ian Wright finds nothing wrong with how Jose Mourinho has Tottenham Hotspur playing
Speaking on The Ringer FC Podcast (h/t Football.london), Arsenal legend Ian Wright has given his backing to Tottenham Hotspur and Jose Mourinho.
The Gunners were the latest side to face our wrath as they were brushed aside at the weekend en route to a 2-0 win. The three points saw us stay ahead of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table on goal difference.
Despite our lofty position and impressive results, there have been suggestions from pundits that some Spurs fans are unhappy with the way Mourinho sets up the team. The Portuguese usually has a safety-first approach that places focus on defensive solidity. But to call that ‘parking the bus’ would be completely ridiculous.
Wright rode to Mourinho’s rescue and dismissed suggestions of the same. He brought up examples such as our clashes against Manchester United and West Bromwich Albion to illustrate his point.
“I cannot understand the pundits saying the fans won’t be happy with the way they’re playing.”
Designed to succeed
Mourinho’s teams are not set up to keep possession of the ball at all times. That is by design rather than an accident. It makes more sense to use an effective gameplan rather than try to be aesthetically pleasing for posterity’s sake.
After all, Arsenal string together a ton of passes without actually getting anywhere.
“You look at Tottenham’s goals, it was just efficient, clinical.”
Wright also went on to add that Spurs players have all bought into Mourinho’s system and appear to have faith in him.
“The players believe in Mourinho right now. They’re getting it done. When you look at their team, goalkeeper, defence, midfield, forwards, you have to start saying, [Mourinho] can push this over.”

Despite what pundits or other club’s fans may say, we have no reason to hate anything Mourinho has brought to Tottenham. The Portuguese is getting the best out of his resources and it is a joy to behold him make us play the way we do.
Tottenham have had good teams in the recent past, however, none of them had the swagger that Mourinho has now brought to North London. Whatever detractors may say, the sight from the top is truly a spectacle to behold.
