Jose Mourinho comes out in defence of Hugo Lloris after mistake against Palace

As reported by the Evening Standard, Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has defended captain Hugo Lloris after his error against Crystal Palace.

Spurs were held 1-1 by the Eagles at Selhurst Park on Sunday afternoon. Harry Kane put us ahead in the first half with a long-range effort. But Jeffrey Schlupp equalised for the home team with just ten minutes left on the clock.

And, Lloris was culpable for the goal as he was slow to react to the free-kick from Eberechi Eze and ended up spilling the ball in the path of Schlupp who hit home from point-blank range.

Asked whether if Mourinho blamed the Tottenham skipper for the result, Mourinho came flying out in his defence, claiming that the Frenchman is the best goalkeeper in the Premier League. (h/t Evening Standard)

“My goalkeeper is the best goalkeeper in the Premier League so I would never be critical of the best goalkeeper in the Premier League, period. If I have to blame anybody I have to blame ourselves, the team.”

The slip-up could have cost us the top spot in the table. Fortunately, Liverpool also dropped points later in the day as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Fulham which meant we end the matchweek as the Premier League leaders.

After a fine performance in the first half, the players seemed to take the foot off the gas in the second half, allowing Palace to gain the initiative. However, we cannot afford this to happen when we face Liverpool in the top-of-the-table clash at Anfield in the coming midweek.
