Jermaine Jenas claims Tottenham missed Harry Winks against Crystal Palace
Speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day 2 (h/t The Focus), former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jermaine Jenas has claimed that the team missed Harry Winks against Crystal Palace this past weekend.
Tottenham were held to a 1-1 draw by the Eagles on Sunday at Selhurst Park as a late goal from Jeffrey Schlupp cancelled out Harry Kane’s first-half effort.
It was far from a convincing display from Jose Mourinho’s men, especially in the second half when the players sat back and handing the initiative over to the home team. And Jenas has pointed out that the team could have done with more control in the middle of the park, which Winks would have been able to provide. (h/t The Focus)
“He’s [Mourinho] been playing with stoppers, Hojbjerg and Sissoko playing deep. When you want to have possession, maybe you need a Winks, maybe a Dele in there. He needs to be able to mix it up in those moments and have more ball-players.”
There is some sense to what Jenas is trying to say. At a time when we needed to seize the initiative and kill the game off, we could have used the presence of more forward-minded midfielders than either of Hojbjerg or Sissoko on the field.
However, Winks wasn’t even part of the matchday squad while Alli came on too late to make any sort of impact on the proceedings.
