Jose Mourinho interested in signing RB Leipzig star Marcel Sabitzer

According to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo (h/t Daily Mail), Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho wants to sign RB Leipzig midfielder Marcel Sabitzer as a replacement for Tanguy Ndombele who is wanted by Barcelona.

Sabitzer has been a key member of the RB Leipzig side since joining the club in 2014. The 26-year-old impressed heavily in the 2019/20 season, playing a crucial role in the club’s third-place finish in Bundesliga and the semi-final run in the UEFA Champions League.

In 44 appearances across all competitions, the Austrian international plundered 16 goals and created 11 more, despite playing in a central midfield role for a large part of the season. He has started the new campaign fairly well as well, bagging three goals and three assists in 15 games so far. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Sabitzer has been linked with a move to Tottenham in the past. And it is now being claimed that Mourinho is intent on signing the Austrian international, as a potential replacement for Tanguy Ndombele, who is being courted by Barcelona. (h/t Daily Mail)

It is claimed that Barcelona maintain an interest in Ndombele and could act on their interest in the near future after his impressive start to the ongoing season. And should that happen, Mourinho has his eyes firmly set on Sabitzer, with the Portuguese ready to sanction a £45m bid for the 26-year-old.

The report further claims that there is a belief at the club that RB Leipzig could consider offloading Sabitzer next year as his contract expires in 2022.

A midfielder with plenty of top-level experience and proven pedigree, signing him would no doubt be a major coup for us. However, a move for him may have to wait until the next summer.
