Garth Crooks lambasts Serge Aurier for returning to old habits in the loss against Leicester
Writing in his BBC column (h/t Football.london), former Tottenham Hotspur forward Garth Crooks mentions that Serge Aurier slipping back to his old ways is ‘concerning’, before criticising Jose Mourinho’s tactics in the 2-0 loss to Leicester City on Sunday.
Tottenham lost 2-0 at home to Leicester City last weekend to slip to 6th in the table. A needless foul by Serge Aurier on Wesley Fofana resulted in a penalty for the Foxes.
The penalty was dispatched by Jamie Vardy in first-half stoppage time to get the scoring underway for the visitors.
James Maddison’s second-half goal was ruled out for offside before Toby Alderweireld deflected a Jamie Vardy header into his own net to seal Spurs’ fate.
Serge Aurier has been in good form under Jose Mourinho, but his foul on Wesley Fofana is reminiscent of his old days. At least that’s what Garth Crooks feels. The former Spurs player says that it is ‘concerning’ that Aurier has slipped back into his old habits.
“Just when you thought Serge Aurier had removed that erratic behaviour from his game, he panics and gives away a penalty.”
Crooks also mentions that it was foolish of the Ivorian barge into the player inside the box.
“Barging into attackers on the edge of his own area is the game of fools.”
The BBC pundit then mentioned that Spurs reverted to everything he ‘hates about a Jose Mourinho’ was a bad experience. He wrote that if Spurs are to play that type of defensive football, they should at least win the game.
