Gareth Bale was subbed off at half-time due to a calf issue, Mourinho confirms
As reported by the Evening Standard, Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has revealed that Gareth Bale did not take the pitch against Stoke City after half-time due to a potential calf injury.
Tottenham faced off against the Potters at the bet365 Stadium on Wednesday night in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals. Mourinho’s men came out victorious, courtesy of goals from Bale himself, along with Ben Davies and Harry Kane.
Bale opened the scoring for us in the first half, as he headed in a Harry Winks cross halfway through the first half. However, the Welsh international was subbed off at half-time, which sent alarm bells ringing. Mourinho, speaking after the match, confirmed that the 31-year-old had decided to come off due to a calf issue.
“It was his decision. Something he felt in the last part of the first half and he didn’t want to come out before the second half so he stayed. Something I think with [his] calf. I’m not sure as at that time I just want to reorganise the team and make the change.”
If injured, it is another setback for the 31-year-old since his return to the club last summer. Bale came back from Real Madrid on a season-long loan deal but has struggled to keep himself fit.
Only last week he had missed a few games due to illness and having made his comeback against the Potters, he seems to have picked up another injury.
