Luka Modric agrees to stay at Real Madrid until 2022 despite Tottenham interest
According to the Daily Mail, Real Madrid star Luka Modric will not be making a return to North London with Tottenham Hotspur anytime soon.
The 35-year-old’s deal with Real Madrid was set to expire next summer. Tottenham could have made a move to sign him on a pre-contract agreement once the January transfer window opened. However, those hopes have been dashed.
As things stand, Modric is set to extend his deal at Real until June 30, 2022. Seeing it through will bring his stay in Spain to ten years.
Modric joined Tottenham from Dinamo Zagreb in 2008. The Croatian went on to establish himself as a leading midfielder in his four-year stay at White Hart Lane. He left us for Real in 2012 for £30million.
The 35-year-old has enjoyed a trophy-laden time with Real. This includes four Champions League titles and numerous other honours.
Modric also saw his game improve while at Real. He led Madrid to the Champions League in 2018 while also taking his country Croatia to their first-ever World Cup final. This saw the midfielder win the 2018 Ballon d’Or. He is the only player in the last 12 years not named Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo to win the prestigious award.
Modric will be pushing 37 by the time his new deal at Real Madrid expires. He had earlier claimed that he would like to end his career with the Spanish giants. It is fair to say that any hopes of him making a return to Tottenham look unlikely.

Modric is a player Mourinho is familiar with, having managed him earlier at Real Madrid. While he is still thought of highly at Tottenham, he is in the final years of his career and one we can afford to pass on.
Nostalgia is well and good but it should not come at the expense of quality. Spurs are better off looking elsewhere.
