Toby Alderweireld linked with a move to Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven
A report by Dutch outlet De Telegraaf (h/t Daily Mail) states that PSV Eindhoven have made contact with the agent of Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld over a possible move.
Alderweireld continues to be an important part of the Tottenham team. Alongside Eric Dier, he has formed a formidable pairing at the back in a Spurs defence that has the second best defensive record in the league.
The Belgian renewed his contract with the Lilywhites back in 2019 which sees him stay at the club until 2023. It would take a significant offer to take the 31-year-old away from Spurs.
Nevertheless, the Eredivisie club have tested the water by contacting his agent Stijn Francis over the possibility of a summer move. His history as an Ajax player may affect the move. (h/t Daily Mail)
Alderweireld joined Ajax’s youth academy at an early age and went on to play for the senior team from 2008 to 2013. He then joined Atletico Madrid before being loaned out to Premier League club Southampton.
A good move?
An impressive spell in England saw Spurs buy Alderweireld in the summer of 2015. Since then, he has made over 200 senior appearances for the club.
While the defender is nearing the age where he would surpass his physical prime, any move that sees him leave in the summer might still be detrimental to Spurs’ future aspirations. Unless, of course, Spurs have a decent backup lined up for him.
Currently, they have Davinson Sanchez and Joe Rodon as backups. Sanchez has not had many first-team starts in recent times and Rodon is highly inexperienced.
