Torino interested in January loan move for Tottenham Hotspur’s Gedson Fernandes
A report by Italian outlet Tuttomercato (h/t ESPN) states that Serie A club Torino are interested in a loan deal for Gedson Fernandes, who currently plays at Tottenham Hotspur.
The 22-year-old joined Spurs on loan from SL Benfica in January 2020. Since then, he has been nothing short of disappointing for Jose Mourinho’s team.
Fernandes has played in 7 Premier League games in the last 12 months, all of them coming off the bench. This season, he is yet to feature in the league. (h/t transfermarkt)
The Portuguese has had opportunities in cup games, but is yet to score or assist for the team. The central midfielder has played in various positions for Mourinho. However, it is still not clear where he fits in Spurs’ first-team picture.
An end to a nightmare spell?
And now, Torino could offer him a lifeline by taking him on loan from Benfica this month itself. The Serie A side seeks to take advantage of Fernandes’ poor vein of form at Spurs and strike a deal before the January deadline. (h/t ESPN)
It is clear that there is no space for Fernandes in the Spurs starting line-up. Mourinho has settled on the midfield trio of Tanguy Ndombele, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and Moussa Sissoko and it is unlikely that Gedson will get a start.
Tottenham may even get in a midfielder themselves before the end of the window. The club has been linked with a return for Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen. (h/t Daily Mail)
