Tottenham ace Toby Alderweireld a summer target for Club Brugge

According to Voetbal 24 (h/t Football.london), Tottenham Hotspur defensive mainstay Toby Alderweireld has emerged as a summer transfer target for Belgian outfit Club Brugge.

The 31-year-old Belgian centre-back has been with Tottenham since 2015, having joined from Atletico Madrid. During his time at the club, Alderweireld has established himself as one of the most reliable centre-backs in the Premier League and is a pivotal member of Jose Mourinho’s team.

The former Ajax man’s future had come into question a couple of years ago when his contract was nearing its expiry. However, following the arrival of Jose, Alderweireld penned a new contract with Tottenham, extending his stay at the club till 2023.

The Belgian international was recently a subject of interest from Dutch outfit PSV Eindhoven. However, Tottenham are said to have made it clear that they did not wish to lose him in the ongoing transfer window. (h/t Football.london)

But, Club Brugge are hoping that the Lilywhites’ stance changes in the summer as they look to take Alderweireld back to his homeland.

Since moving to Tottenham, Alderweireld has made 218 appearances for the club, scoring nine goals and setting up five more. Seventeen of those appearances have coming in the ongoing campaign. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Alderweireld will be turning 32 in March. However, the experience that the Belgian brings to our squad cannot be questioned. With his contract running till the summer of 2023, the club are in no pressure to offload him immediately either.

Having lost Jan Vertonghen on a free transfer last summer, letting Alderweireld leave as well wouldn’t be the smartest move. Moreover, given how highly Mourinho regards the 31-year-old, it does seem very unlikely that an exit will be sanctioned.
