Tottenham star Matt Doherty sent warning over his future at the club
Speaking to RTE’s Game On (h/t Football.london), former Republic of Ireland international David Connolly has admitted he fears for the future of Matt Doherty at Tottenham Hotspur.
The Irishman arrived at Tottenham last summer from fellow Premier League club Wolves. Hailed as a coup upon his signing, Doherty has struggled to live up to the billing for the Lilywhites halfway through his first season with the club.
Doherty has been in and out of Tottenham’s starting lineup, having failed to make the desired impression. On Thursday, the full-back put in an uninspiring display against Liverpool. Having initially started as the left wing-back, the Republic of Ireland international offered very little.
Moved to his preferred right-back slot after the break, Doherty was partly guilty for Liverpool’s second goal of the game, following which Mourinho was seen remonstrating him from the touchline. And, speaking after the game, former Irish international Connolly has admitted things don’t look good for his compatriot at the club.
“For one of the goals, Mourinho was screaming at Doherty. You could see his body language. I just can’t see it working out for him at Tottenham. They played with wing-backs ]against Liverpool] but Doherty was on the left.
“Whenever I’ve watched him for Tottenham, and obviously I want him to do well because I want him to perform well for Ireland, I really don’t think he suits them. I don’t know if Mourinho suits him as a personality either. I just worry about him at Tottenham.”

Doherty has featured 18 times in all competitions for Tottenham. Only half of those appearances have come in the Premier League. Goes without saying that the Irishman needs to pull up his socks as soon as possible.
