Tottenham tipped to sign Diego Costa as cover for Harry Kane
Speaking to Football Insider (h/t Express), former Premier League star Danny Mills has backed Tottenham Hotspur to make a move for Diego Costa to add cover for Harry Kane.
The Spanish striker is a free agent after he had his contract with Atletico Madrid terminated last month. He is a player who Spurs’ boss Jose Mourinho knows very well having worked with him at Chelsea.
And Mills has insisted that Tottenham may consider making a deadline day swoop for the Spaniard in order to provide additional cover for Harry Kane and add more firepower to the attack.
“There’s also Diego Costa still out there, you know. Okay, he’s got one or two issues that you have to deal with Diego Costa but as a short-term measure from now to the end of the season, I’m surprised nobody has taken a gamble on him. With his record which is outstanding.
“Carlos Vinicius is there to step up but I think it depends how long Harry Kane is going to be out for. That’s ultimately going to be the key. Is it going to be 10 days to two weeks or is it going to be a month to six weeks? That’s what Mourinho will be fearful of. ”
Kane picked up an injury last week against Liverpool. The striker, however, is expected to be out for just a couple of weeks.

Costa has prior Premier League experience and has tasted success under Mourinho. However, the veteran forward looked well below his best during his final days at Atletico Madrid.
While his free agency does make him an attractive prospect, he is likely to command big wages. And given his recent fitness problems, that would be a gamble Tottenham are better off not taking.
