Dele Alli closing in on Tottenham first-team return after recovering from injury

According to Football London, Dele Alli is on the verge of returning to the fold at Tottenham after spending the past few weeks on the sidelines with a tendon injury.

The England international is expected to recover from his injury this week and could return to the mix after playing a bit-part role for the Lilywhites so far this season. Jose Mourinho has already spoken about (h/t Football London) Tanguy Ndombele’s improvement in terms of fitness and tactical responsibility.

Ndombele has flourished in an advanced attacking role this season. But as per the report, he is seen as a deep midfield option at Tottenham in the long run. His development could prompt Mourinho to slot the Frenchman back in his natural position.

That would open the door for Alli to make an impression in the No.10 position behind Harry Kane. With Giovani Lo Celso currently on the sidelines nursing a hamstring issue, Alli is expected to get his fair share of opportunities in the coming weeks.

The 24-year-old had been heavily linked with a reunion with former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino at Paris Saint-Germain in the January window after falling out of favour under Mourinho. However, the Lilywhites eventually refused to sanction a loan move for the attacking midfielder due to Lo Celso’s struggles with injuries. (h/t Guardian)

Hence, Alli remains a part of the squad heading into a crucial and hectic final quarter of the season. He has only started once in the PL so far this term but is likely to get a chance to reclaim his spot in the side. With Tottenham still alive in all four competitions, Mourinho will surely need to rotate his players to avoid a potential burnout.
