Jose Mourinho chooses to focus on three Tottenham players after big defeat to Manchester City

In an interview after the 3-0 defeat against Manchester City (h/t Express), Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho singled out three of his players for praise.

He mentioned Harry Kane, Ben Davies, and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as he praised his side’s bravery in the loss. Mourinho credited the team for not giving up despite being in a tough situation.

“I had guys in a difficult situation on the pitch but they were brave. A team that is not united would give up… but I saw guys like Harry Kane, Ben Davies, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg giving everything.”

He said he had ‘nothing to say against’ his players. This is despite individual errors costing Spurs on the night. (h/t Express)

Hojbjerg brought down Ilkay Gundogan to let Manchester City open the scoring from the spot. Hugo Lloris was suspect for both goals, while Davinson Sanchez let City’s German midfielder score his 2nd with ease.

Tough times

The loss leaves Spurs in a tough position. Earlier this week, it was reported that Mourinho’s job is safe until at least the end of the season despite the team’s rancid form. (h/t Daily Mail)

It remains to be seen if the stance changes after the Lilywhites succumbed to their 5th defeat in 6 matches. We also have just 1 win in our last 7 away league games.

Spurs have fallen all the way down to 9th place, with the title well and truly out of their sights. A fight for top 4 seems like a realistic goal, but the side would need to put a great run of games together and wait for a miracle.
