Jose Mourinho safe from Tottenham sack until the end of the season

According to ESPN, Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho could have till the end of the season before a decision is taken on his future. Club chairman Daniel Levy is willing to wait until the campaign ends before taking a call on whether to sack the Portuguese manager.

Recent weeks and results have put Mourinho under the media scanner as the club have slipped to ninth place in the league. Defeats against Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea have seen Mourinho’s future called into question.

However, Spurs face a huge financial outlay in case they sack Mourinho before 2023. He could be entitled to a severance package of £30 million given that there is no break clause in the contract. There is another factor keeping Mourinho’s job safe for the moment.

The Carabao Cup final which is to be held in April gives him the chance to win a trophy. Spurs haven’t won silverware since 2008 and with one so close, they are unlikely to pull the trigger now. They face a rampant Manchester City in the final but the belief is that Mourinho can deliver the goods in the final.

Another competition that is buying him time is the Europa League. Levy is aware that if the side can go all the way, they can get a ticket to the Champions League next season, whatever be their league ranking. Mourinho has done it in 2017 with Manchester United and that is being considered.

Nonetheless, Mourinho will be expected to improve results in the coming games after a good showing against Wolfsberger in the Europa League. The next few weeks would see them face the likes of West Ham and Arsenal who are likely to be challenging.
