Jose Mourinho faces sack as Tottenham lose to West Ham

According to the Express, Jose Mourinho may very well have managed his last game for Tottenham Hotspur as he faces the axe after the latest defeat to West Ham United.

The Portuguese has been under intense pressure of late with Tottenham slipping from first to ninth in the Premier League table since December. The performances have been dour and listless and with results not going the team’s way, things have been a tad tense.

However, the midweek win against Wolfsberger AC in the UEFA Europa League seemed to have sparked a turnaround. But, it only turned out to be a false dawn as Tottenham fell to another league defeat against the Hammers at the London Stadium.

Michail Antonio and Jesse Lingard scored early in the first half and second half respectively for West Ham. And even though Tottenham rallied late on through Gareth Bale and Lucas Moura, they were unable to salvage anything from the game.

Heading into the game, the Daily Mail had reported that Mourinho could be shown the doors if Tottenham lost the derby. And now, the Express is citing that update and claiming that the Portuguese tactician could have managed his last game for Spurs.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy was reluctant to sack Jose as the former Manchester United boss will be due a £30m severance fee should his contract be terminated prematurely. But given the way things are panning out on the pitch, the Spurs’ head honcho’s hands may be forced.

West Ham moved to fourth place following the victory, with Tottenham now lagging them by nine points in the table. Another season without Champions League football could be detrimental to the club’s finances, given the current environs affected by the pandemic.

It now remains to be seen if Levy decides to swing the axe or give Mourinho time to turn things around.
