Jose Mourinho backed to replace Hugo Lloris with a world-class player at Tottenham
Speaking to Football Insider (h/t Express), former Premier League star Danny Mills has backed Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho to replace veteran star Hugo Lloris with a world-class player.
The veteran goalkeeper has endured an indifferent campaign, making uncharacteristic errors in a few matches that have hurt the team. And with the skipper now showing signs of age catching up to him, Mills is of the opinion that Tottenham would be better off replacing him with a world-class player come summer.
“I know he’s won the World Cup and has been a very, very good goalkeeper but I never thought he was world class. If you want to start winning the Champions League, getting in the top four you need a world-class goalkeeper.
“There are very few teams that have won the Premier League or Champions League without a very good goalkeeper and I’m talking exceptional. His mistakes aren’t howlers, they’re not glaring errors but you look at it and go ‘I think he could have done better in that scenario’.”
Lloris’ blow-hot-blow-cold form has meant that the rest of the defensive unit has also suffered a bit, according to Mills.
“The goalkeeper is thinking ‘I can’t trust the defenders’ and the defenders are thinking ‘I cannot trust the goalkeeper’. All of sudden it causes a little bit of indecisiveness.”

Lloris’ form has been a concern this term. While there have been impressive displays every now and then, there have been some important mistakes as well. With Joe Hart not the ideal man to replace him, the club could perhaps look for a solid choice to take over from the captain ahead of next season.
