Matt Doherty backed to turn things around at Tottenham Hotspur
Speaking to RTE’s Saturday Sport, former Republic of Ireland international Stephen Elliott has claimed that Matt Doherty has what it takes to turn things around at Tottenham Hotspur.
The Irish full-back arrived at Tottenham Hotspur from Wolves in the summer transfer window last year. However, Doherty has failed to live up to the expectations and has looked a pale shadow of his former self during his time with Wolves.
Doherty’s misfiring form coupled with Serge Aurier’s improvement this season has seen the Ivorian remain Tottenham’s first-choice at right-back. But, Elliott has claimed that his compatriot has what it takes to change his fortunes and show his quality at Tottenham.
“I think he has what it takes to turn things around, and hopefully it won’t be long before we saw the Matt Doherty we saw at Wolves.”
Elaborating on why Doherty has found the going tough at Tottenham, Elliott insisted that the way Wolves played suited his game more than the way Tottenham have operated under Jose Mourinho.
“The way Wolves play, it really suited the way Matt Doherty played. It suited his game and his marauding runs down the right that we have become accustomed to over the past couple of years.
“Spurs set up quite differently. Jose Mourinho tends not to be as expansive. Doherty has missed out on game time because of the way Mourinho plays.”

The 29-year-old, since arriving at Tottenham last summer, has managed 25 appearances registering three assists. However, only 13 of those appearances have come in the Premier League. (h/t Transfermarkt)
There were some glimpses of positive in the recent game against Fulham though, and hopefully, Doherty is able to prove Elliott right and turn it around at Tottenham.
