Matt Doherty criticized for poor Tottenham form since transfer from Wolverhampton Wanderers
Speaking to Football Insider (h/t football.london), former Leeds United striker, Noel Whelan, highlighted how Matt Doherty has struggled at Tottenham Hotspur since his summer transfer.
Spurs signed the Wolverhampton Wanderers right-back for £13.4m after the end of last season. But since then, he has struggled to cement himself at right-back for his new club.
The Irish defender has made just 10 league starts this season so far with 1 league assist to his name. Jose Mourinho has tended to prefer Serge Aurier in the right-back spot instead of Doherty on many occasions.
The Ivorian international has started 14 league games, scoring twice and making one assist. And Whelan has pointed out the struggles Doherty has faced this season at his new team.
Struggling to fit in
“He’s somebody that doesn’t seem to have settled easily into life in London or at Tottenham. It is worrying because they haven’t got an abundance of right-backs there. You really need that wing-back to be everything because that is what’s so important to their side right now.”
Whelen noted that Doherty is not really excelling at defending or attacking, and it is proving to be harmful to Tottenham.
“It’s not only defending but getting forward, overlaps getting into good areas, showing that quality. When you’ve got one player not doing it on one side, it weakens you.”
Doherty has just 1 start in Spurs’ last 7 Premier League games. However, he did play the full 90 minutes in their most recent league match, which was a 1-0 away win at Fulham. (h/t transfermarkt)

Doherty would be hoping to start back-to-back league games for the first time since January 2nd, 2021, but would face competition down that side from Aurier, who is expected to return (h/t BT Sport) to the squad.
