Tottenham Hotspur to monitor Antonio Rudiger if he doesn’t renew Chelsea contract
A report by Football Insider (h/t Express) mentions that Tottenham Hotspur could make another bid for Antonio Rudiger if he doesn’t renew his contract at Chelsea.
The German defender was not favoured by Frank Lampard and was primed to leave the club last summer and more recently, in the January transfer window. That has changed now.
He has played in every Premier League game under Thomas Tuchel. The German manager is unbeaten in his first 10 games as Chelsea boss and Rudiger has played a big role in that.
Rudiger’s contract runs out in the summer of 2022 and he will be available for free at the end of next season. Wary of this, Chelsea are planning to enter talks with him over a new long-term deal.
A good option?
And the report mentions that should the contract talks fail, Jose Mourinho would be happy to make another bid for a player he admires. Spurs tried to sign the German international in the summer.
The talks fell through due to disagreements over the loan fee. The Blues wanted Spurs to dish out £4m upfront to take Rudiger on loan and pay the entirety of his £150,000-a-week wages.
Spurs instead with Joe Rodon from Swansea, who is yet to find his feet at Tottenham. Rudiger is certainly someone who would strengthen Spurs’ backline.
The 28-year-old was impressive in his team’s wins against big teams such as Liverpool, Tottenham, and Atletico Madrid in the past few weeks. And the recent faith shown in him by Tuchel could complicate things for Spurs.
