Matt Doherty opens up about his Tottenham Hotspur ‘mistakes’ and reveals how he wants to improve on it
Speaking in an interview for the matchday program for the game against Crystal Palace (h/t Football.london), new signing Matt Doherty revealed how he plans to turn around his bad form at Tottenham.
The right-back joined Spurs from Wolverhampton Wanderers last summer for £13.4million. But since then, he has failed to have an impact on the squad.
The Irishman has failed to displace Serge Aurier on the right flank and has 2 starts in the last 8 league games for his team. But Doherty is not unaware of his poor form and has himself acknowledged it.
“I haven’t been playing that well so far but, hopefully, I can turn that around. My form has not been the best… There are things I need to improve on and things I need to adapt to.”
Turning the corner
Nevertheless, he thinks that things are improving for him gradually. Doherty played the full 90 minutes in Spurs’ last 2 Premier League outings, both of which they won.
“I feel like, lately, I’ve started to go around that bend, the form is kind of improving and, when that happens, things start to come off for you and that obviously builds your confidence.”
It is good to hear that from the former Wolves full-back. Recently, Noel Whelan underlined Doherty’s poor form and stated how important a right-back is to Spurs’ playing style.
But with the Irish international now seemingly turning a corner, there is hope that the club sees a glimpse of the player they did last season at Molineux.
