Jose Mourinho tactics slammed as ‘dated’ by former Tottenham star Darren Bent

Speaking to talkSPORT (h/t Daily Mail), former Tottenham striker Darren Bent has called the tactics and methods of manager Jose Mourinho as dated.

Mourinho was brought in as a replacement for Mauricio Pochettino in November 2019. The Portuguese’s methods were always going to in stark contrast to the way the team played under Poch. But it was seen as an acceptable trade-off provided Mourinho led Spurs to success and silverware.

And, for quite a while, it looked like Mourinho would deliver on the objective, with Spurs enjoying a period at the top of the Premier League table and making it to the finals of the Carabao Cup.

However, all that hope has pretty much drained out as Spurs have slipped down to eighth in the league table and were dumped out of the Europa League by Dinamo Zagreb despite having had a first-leg lead. Bent, speaking after the latest setback, has claimed that Mourinho’s tactics are outdated.

“I wouldn’t say he’s a bad manager, but I just think for whatever reason his tactics might be a bit dated now.”

Bent also added that Tottenham going on to win the Carabao Cup next mont would only serve the job of papering over the cracks.

“When they got rid of Poch when they did, and we know they were on the decline then, they brought in Jose Mourinho to win a trophy. It will paper over the cracks. A lot of people had put them and United as favourites. The fact they went out like they did against Zagreb – I don’t think winning the League Cup is enough.”

With the top-four also looking like a difficult prospect, Mourinho is finding himself under intense scrutiny. It remains to be seen for how much longer he continues as Tottenham boss.
