Transfer News: Tottenham identify Mike Maignan to replace Hugo Lloris
According to transfer news from French publication L’Equipe (h/t Express), Tottenham Hotspur have identified Lille OSC goalkeeper Mike Maignan as the heir to Hugo Lloris.
Maignan, 25, came through the youth ranks at PSG before making the switch to Lille in the summer of 2015 in search of regular game-time. After a couple of years serving as a back-up, he became the first-choice for Les Dogues in 2017/18 and hasn’t looked back since.
Till date, Maignan has made 172 appearances for Lille, racking up 60 clean sheets. The 25-year-old has been particularly impressive over the past couple of years, drawing the attention of Tottenham Hotspur.
Spurs have had Hugo Lloris as their undisputed first-choice goalkeeper since 2012. The Frenchman, however, is 34 and is nearing the twilight of his career. Errors have started to creep up in his game as has been evident in a few matches over the past year.
With his contract also expiring in a year, it makes sense for Tottenham to usher in a new era in the goalkeeping department. Maignan, to that end, has emerged as a top target for the club, as per the aforementioned report. At 25, the Lille goalkeeper still has his best years ahead of him.
He has also had some exposure to European football while he has been in and around the France national team for a while now, pushing Lloris for the No. 1 spot in the World Champions’ starting lineup.

Like Lloris, Maignan too will be out of contract at the end of the 2021/22 campaign, potentially making him available for a bargain price this summer. A talented keeper with age on his side, he could prove to be the ideal long-term successor for Lloris at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
It is now up to the club to make the first move and ensure that he does not slip out of their hands.
