Tottenham star Matt Doherty injured while away with the Republic of Ireland
According to Football.london, Tottenham Hotspur defender Matt Doherty has picked up an injury while away on international duty with the Republic of Ireland.
Doherty, 29, played the entire ninety minutes as Ireland slumped to a 3-2 defeat to Serbia in their first game of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. He was involved this past weekend as well, as Ireland suffered a shock loss to Luxembourg.
However, Doherty lasted just 45 minutes in the upset defeat as he had to be taken off at half-time due to an injury. Ireland are next scheduled to take on World Cup hosts Qatar in a friendly in Debrecen, Hungary on Tuesday evening.
And ahead of the game, it has been confirmed that Doherty has been ruled out of the clash due to the injury and will not be making the trip to Debrecen, allowing with Sheffield United full-back Enda Stevens.
The Irish FA confirmed the news on their official website but there was no mention of the nature of Doherty’s injury or any timeline on his return.
Doherty joined Tottenham Hotspur in the last summer transfer window from fellow Premier League club Wolves. The right-back’s signing was hailed as a coup but that hasn’t how things have panned out thus far. Inconsistent and erroneous, Doherty has struggled to establish himself as the first-choice right-back at Tottenham.

Nevertheless, with the business end of the campaign fast approaching, it is important that Jose Mourinho & co. have all players available. All hands on deck will be needed if we are to pull through and finish in the top four in the Premier League.
It now remains to be seen whether Doherty will be fit in time to face Newcastle United this Sunday afternoon.
