Transfer News: Tottenham star Toby Alderweireld emerges as a transfer target for Club Brugge
According to news from Voetbal 24 (h/t 90min.com), Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has emerged as a summer transfer target for Belgian outfit Club Brugge.
The 32-year-old Belgian international has been with Tottenham since 2015, having arrived from La Liga giants Atletico Madrid. During his time at the club, Alderweireld has grown into a vital player while also establishing himself as one of the top centre-backs in the Premier League not so long ago.
Till date, Alderweireld has made 228 appearances for Tottenham, scoring nine goals in the process. Still an integral member of the side despite his advancing age, the 32-year-old has made 27 appearances across all competitions in the 2020/21 campaign. (h/t Transfermarkt)
However, as he enters the final phase of his career, a return to his homeland Belgium has been hinted at by his family members in the past. And now, Club Brugge are said to be desperate to land him in the upcoming transfer window.
The Jupiler Pro League leaders have been long-term admirers of Alderweireld and are prepared to do everything in their powers to secure his signing ahead of rivals Royal Antwerp, as per the report.

Alderweireld signed a new long-term contract with Tottenham in December 2019, extending his stay at the club till the summer of 2023. That means he still has a little over two years left on his current deal.
But, with Tottenham looking to bring in a new central defender in the summer, one of the players may need to be sacrificed. It, however, remains to be seen if the club is prepared to sanction an exit for Alderweireld only a year after having lost another experienced defender in Jan Vertonghen.
