Transfer News: Tottenham leading West Ham, Leeds in Sam Johnstone pursuit
According to transfer news from ESPN, Tottenham Hotspur are leading the race to sign West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, who is also a target for West Ham and Leeds United.
The 28-year-old Johnstone came up through the youth ranks at Manchester United but never made the successful transition to the first-team. After a series of loan spells away at Oldham Athletic, Scunthorpe United, Walsall, Yeovil Town, Doncaster Rovers, Preston North End and Aston Villa, he joined West Brom in a permanent transfer in 2018.
Johnstone has been one of the Baggies’ best players ever since and helped them win promotion back to the Premier League last season. And while West Brom have struggled on their return to the top-flight, the Englishman has been one of the few players who has shown promise in a campaign that looks set to end with relegation.
Till date, Johnstone has featured 29 times for West Brom this term, keeping five clean sheets. While the Baggies may end up going down the second division, the 28-year-old seems set for a swift return to the Premier League amid interest from Tottenham, West Ham and Leeds. (h/t ESPN)
The report claims that Tottenham have doubts over current first-choice Hugo Lloris. The Frenchman has had an indifferent season so far and as a result, the club is looking at long-term replacements for the veteran, with Johnstone emerging as one. In fact, it is said that Spurs are leading the chase for the English goalkeeper.

Johnstone is a player that Jose Mourinho will know from his time at Manchester United. The goalkeeper could be sold for as little as £10m this summer as his contract expires in a year. A shrewd purchase if it gets over the line.
