Jose Mourinho told to axe four Tottenham stars by Gabriel Agbonlahor
Speaking to Football Insider (h/t Express), former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has urged Jose Mourinho to consider revamping his entire centre-back department at Tottenham.
After a fine start to the season, things have unraveled for Tottenham since the turn of the year. The team is now fighting for a spot in the top-four after having been contenders for the PL title while we also crashed out of the Europa League.
The Tottenham defence has been called into question of late as we failed to pick up victories after taking a lead against Newcastle United as well as Manchester United this weekend.
Agbonlahor, in his interview, was asked about the Tottenham defence and summer signing Joe Rodon in particular. The ex-Aston Villa star was of the opinion that none of the centre-backs at the club are at the level needed to take us to the next level. He also added that Mourinho should consider revampign his defensive options in the summer.
“I’m not too sure about him [Rodon], to be honest. I feel he’s a good player but he’s not going to take Spurs to where they want to go. Spurs want to get into the Champions League places and want to win things. Rodon, Sanchez, Alderwerield, Dier are not going to get them there. They need a whole new back four.”
Sanchez and Dier have had an up-and-down campaign so far while Alderweireld, too, has been in and out of the side a lot. Rodon, having arrived in the summer, hasn’t had a lot of opportunities. But it would be fair to point out that he has been our best centre-back in the last few games.

New additions to the backline are pretty much a necessity at this moment though. And it will be interesting to see if the club sees it the same way and decides to bring in a new defender in the summer.
