Transfer News: Tottenham face Arsenal competition in Jerome Boateng pursuit

According to news from Sky Sports Germany (h/t Express), Tottenham Hotspur have been joined by arch-rivals Arsenal in the transfer race for Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng.

The 32-year-old towering defender has been with the Bavarians since 2011, having joined from Premier League club Manchester City. Over the course of his ten-year stint in Germany, Boateng has essayed a crucial role in the success that Die Roten have achieved.

However, that association is set to come to an end when the ongoing season culminates. Indeed, Boateng’s current contract with Bayern Munich runs out at the end of the season, with the club already confirming that new deal will not be offered. (h/t Express)

This has sparked a flurry of interest in the German international’s services with the likes of Barcelona, Tottenham Hotspur all taking an interest. In fact, it had been reported that Tottenham had already held concrete talks with the representatives of Boateng over a summer transfer.

However, we could be set to face a battle for his signing as our local rivals Arsenal have made a late entry into the picture for Boateng’s signing. The Gunners are on the lookout for reinforcements and his free-agent status would be appealing given their financial situation.

Boateng is said to be open to returning to the Premier League despite his failed stint in England with Manchester City. Along with Tottenham and Arsenal, the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United have also been mooted as possible destinations for the 32-year-old.

Even though Boateng is entering the final phase of his career, his experience and winning mentality would make him a handy option to have in the ranks. Throw in his free agency and it is not hard to see why so many clubs are lining up to sign him. It now remains to be seen if Tottenham are able to come out on top in this transfer race.
