Transfer News: Tottenham consider Cedric Bakambu as Harry Kane backup
According to news from The Telegraph, Tottenham could look to raid Chinese Super League side Beijing Guoan for the transfer of Cedric Bakambu as backup for Harry Kane.
The 30-year-old Bakambu came through the ranks at French outfit Sochaux before enjoying a stint with Turkish club Bursaspor. Having impressed there, the striker secured a transfer to Villarreal in 2015 where he spent two-and-a-half years, scoring 47 goals in 105 games. (h/t Transfermarkt)
January 2018 saw Bakambu make the switch to the Chinese Super League where he joined Beijing Guoan. Since moving to the east, the DR Congo international has tasted a lot of success, bagging 53 goals and 20 assists from 73 games, winning the Chinese Cup. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Having moved to China, Bakambu almost secured a return to Europe last year when Barcelona came close to signing him, only to pull the plug on the deal at the last moment, when he was flying to complete the move no less. (h/t The Telegraph)
However, there could be another chance for him to come back to Europe, with the report claiming that Tottenham could look at him as a possible backup for Kane. Spurs could need to dip their toes in the transfer market for a new striker in the summer given as Carlos Vinicius’ loan deal runs out at the end of the season.
There have also been speculations surrounding the future of Kane at the club. But Tottenham intend to keep hold of the England captain no matter what. However, a backup option could still be needed, which is where Bakambu could enter the equation. (h/t The Telegraph)

With Chinese clubs looking to cut costs, Bakambu could be an experienced, cost-effective option for us, albeit a short-term one. It remains to be seen if there is genuine interest from Tottenham in the 30-year-old.
