Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur to listen to offers for Erik Lamela
A report by football.london mentions that Tottenham Hotspur are ready to listen to transfer offers for Erik Lamela due to the duration of his current contract and his ‘history’.
The Argentine winger joined Spurs in the summer of 2013 from AS Roma. But he has failed to pin down a regular starting spot for himself in the XI, with injuries playing a part in that.
And speaking back in February, Spurs manager Jose Mourinho talked about the Argentine’s injury history at the club, which he thought was ‘very negative’.
“I love Coco. Of course, when I arrived, his history of injuries was incredibly negative. Was very, very, very hard. That’s the truth. In this moment he’s fit, but of course a player with his history.”
Lamela offf in the summer?
It is this history, coupled with his contract situation, that the report mentions as the reason for Lamela being up for sale once the season ends. His current contract at Tottenham expires in the summer of 2022.
And it is obvious that Spurs would prefer that a situation doesn’t arise where there is no contract renewal and the January transfer window of 2022 approaches.
Lamela is yet to become a regular for the club. The 29-year-old has made just 5 starts in the Premier League so far this season and has largely been used as a substitute. (h/t transfermarkt)
So, it seems like Spurs don’t have a lot to lose if Lamela does leave. Rather, it would be an unwanted situation where the club stands to lose him on a free transfer a year later.
