Toby Alderweireld mentions how Ryan Mason and Mauricio Pochettino are similar as Tottenham managers
Speaking in an interview this weekend (h/t Mirror), Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld revealed that interim manager, Ryan Mason, has shades of Mauricio Pochettino in him.
Spurs, of course, let the Argentine boss go in late 2019 in order to hire Jose Mourinho. Despite not winning a trophy, Pochettino did an impeccable job as Tottenham manager in his 5-year stay.
But nothing good lasts forever, and that was the case for his successor as well. After enjoying a promising start to his career, Mourinho was sacked by the club last week.
That has left Spurs with U-23 coach, Ryan Mason, serving as their interim manager. And speaking about his former teammate, Alderweireld revealed that it feels ‘familiar’ with Mason because of how similar he is to Pochettino.
“Everyone knows he played under Pochettino, he has a lot of ideas from him and we only can agree that’s very good. Of course, he will bring his own view of football and his own ideas, but we can see similarities for sure.”
Next Poch?
Mason, 29, and Alderweireld were teammates for one year at the club before the Englishman left for Hull City. An unfortunate skull injury made him retire from playing football, but he soon entered Spurs’ coaching staff.
Age, however, is not a hurdle for Mason as he presents himself as very ‘mature’ to the players, according to the Belgian defender.
“It’s going wonderfully. It has only been a couple of days but we respect him, he is a big personality; how he talks, how he presents himself. That says a lot about him – he’s 29 but he presents himself as very mature.”

That is really positive news to hear for Spurs fans. The club has a top 4 place left to fight for in the Premier League, the dream of which was kept alive after a comeback win against Southampton in Mason’s first game in charge.
