Tottenham News: Rafael Benitez would be open to managerial job

According to the Evening Standard, former Liverpool and Real Madrid manager Rafael Benitez would consider any approach made by Tottenham as the hunt for Jose Mourinho’s replacement continues.

Mourinho was shown the doors by Daniel Levy and Tottenham on Monday last week after a series of poor results that saw the club crash out of the Europa League and drop out of European qualifying spots in the Premier League.

Former midfielder Ryan Mason was given the reins on an interim basis until the end of the season as the club scours the market for the ideal man to take over. However, there has been little luck for Spurs in the two weeks’ since Jose was sacked.

Tottenham have already been snubbed by Julian Nagelsmann, who opted to join Bayern Munich at the end of the season while Brendan Rodgers, another top target, is happy and content at Leicester City. (h/t Evening Standard)

Erik ten Hag was another target high on the wishlist of the Tottenham hierarchy. However, he, too, has snubbed the club, instead signing a new contract with De Godenzonen extending his stay at the club till 2022. (h/t Evening Standard)

At this rate, we’re fast running out of managers to consider. However, one name that has now emerged as an outside contender is that of Rafael Benitez. The Spaniard is without a job since he quit his post with Chinese Super League side Dalian Professional.

A manager with a CV that boasts of stints with Liverpool, Inter Milan, Chelsea and Real Madrid and trophies everywhere he has managed, Benitez would certainly be an intriguing choice. And it is being claimed that he would be open to the job if an approach is made by Tottenham.

However, he might not be the attack-minded manager that Tottenham are said to be craving for as Benitez, like Mourinho, is somewhat known for his pragmatic approach. So, a move may not be forthcoming after all.
