Roberto Martinez to replace Mourinho at Tottenham Hotspur as new manager?

Belgium manager Roberto Martinez open to Premier League return amidst Tottenham Hotspur interest

According to The Sun, Belgium manager Roberto Martinez is open to returning to the Premier League amidst interest from a number of clubs including Tottenham Hotspur.

The North Londoners are on the lookout for a new manager following the sacking of Jose Mourinho. Ryan Mason is currently the caretaker manager and will see out the current campaign in the hotseat.

Unlike Mason, Martinez is a seasoned manager with previous Premier League experience. He managed both Wigan Athletic and Everton in the top flight before taking over Belgium. The Europeans are currently the number one team in the world.

Daniel Levy is in no hurry to name a permanent manager and this could mean good news for Martinez. After all, the Spaniard is set to lead Belgium at this summer’s European Championships. If he were to be handed the Spurs job, one of his backroom staff could take pre-season training at Spurs while he is at the tournament. (h/t The Sun)

Martinez is keen to get back to the day-to-day interactions with players and might call time on his five-year spell at the international level. A manager who employs a style of football that is pleasing to the eye, he has Levy’s favour. (h/t The Sun)

He is not, however, the only manager on Spurs’ radar with the likes of Julian Nagelsmann, Brendan Rodgers and Erik ten Hag also linked. Of them, Nagelsmann is set to join Bayern Munich while ten Hag recently signed a one-year extension at Ajax Amsterdam. Signing Rodgers would not be easy either and Tottenham may need to compensate Leicester City handsomely to prise away the Northern Irishman.

Spurs are a club that have regressed since their Champions League final appearance in 2019. While we do have a decent squad at our disposal, we have lacked a manager who can put together a long-term plan for continued development and success. Whether Martinez will be the man to deliver it remains to be seen.
