Tottenham dealt major blow in pursuit of former Liverpool star

Tottenham handed Danny Ings blow as striker expected to stay at Southampton

According to the Express, Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a major blow in their pursuit of Danny Ings as Southampton CEO Martin Semmens expects the striker to stay put at the club.

Ings, 28, has rediscovered his best form since leaving Liverpool for Southampton in 2018, initially on loan before making the transfer permanent a year later. The England international has enjoyed a productive couple of seasons at the South Coast club, leading to interest from a number of clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur. (h/t Express)

The fact that Ings is set to enter the final year of his contract with the Saints made an exit a likely possibility as well. However, CEO Martin Semmens has dismissed any such possibility, insisting that Ings will stay at the St. Mary’s Stadium this summer and beyond.

“I think he probably will [renew]. Like I’ve said all along, Danny’s been really open and clear with his communication with the club and what he wants to do. He’s working hard for us. He’s committed to us, he’s committed to playing for England in the summer. The players are free to make their own choices and Danny will make his own choice but, if you ask me now, I think Danny will be with us next season.

“We hope he will commit to the club and be with us until the end of his career and beyond. That’s what I think will happen, but you never know in football. What I can tell you, and Ralph [Hasenhuttl] will say the same, is that Danny has never done anything but be incredibly hardworking and committed to this club.”

With Carlos Vinicius likely to return to parent club SL Benfica once his loan deal runs out at the end of the season, Tottenham will need to bring in a new striker to cover for Harry Kane, provided that the England captain stays. If he does not, then we may very well need to splash for two strikers in the summer.

Ings, given his rejuvenation since signing Southampton, would have been a good signing. However, it seems like he might be inclined towards signing a new contract with the Saints.
