Tottenham Hotspur’s stance on hosting UEFA Champions League final between Chelsea and Manchester City revealed
A report by football.london mentions that Tottenham Hotspur are ‘not planning to hold talks’ to host the UEFA Champions League final between Manchester City and Chelsea at their massive new stadium.
Ever since Turkey was added to the government’s red list, the location of the UCL final has been questioned. The final was initially supposed to take place at the Ataturk Stadium in Instanbul, but that seems highly unlikely now.
Anyone travelling back to the UK from red list countries would observe a 10-day quarantine in a government-approved hotel.
Transport secretary Grant Shapps states that red list countries should only be visited in extreme circumstances and that the FA is in talks with UEFA regarding a change of venue. The final decision, however, lies in the hand of the European body.
Not in our backyard
Wembley Stadium already has a Championship play-off final to host on the same date. And in light of this, Aston Villa and Tottenham’s stadiums have been tipped to host the final. (h/t football.london)
But the report mentions that Spurs have ”not entered into talks, or plan to, to hold the Champions League final this season’. This would be a sigh of relief for Spurs fans.
It would have been a sour sight for Spurs fans seeing rivals Chelsea celebrate their triumph at their newly-built stadium. But that should not be a worry anymore.
Spurs’ own involvement in Europe was ended in the last-8 stage when Jose Mourinho’s side were dumped out of the competition by Dinamo Zagreb after a second-leg humiliation.
