Alasdair Gold: Tottenham Hotspur to retain faith in Steve Hitchen
According to Football.london, reliable journalist Alasdair Gold has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur have no intention of bringing in a replacement for Steve Hitchen as the club’s director of football.
Tottenham have had the likes of David Pleat, Frank Arnesen, Damien Comolli, Franco Baldini and Paul Mitchell all experience varying levels of successes in the role in recent years. The job is a challenging one given the lack of funds made available at Spurs.
Despite being the ninth richest club in the world, Daniel Levy is not known for splashing the cash. Hia frugal approach places a lot of emphasis on smart recruitment. This often forces the club to pursue raw talents who always carry an element of risk.
Hitchen is not a popular figure among supporters. While he has had some success as a scout, his performance in the front office has been underwhelming. His only previous executive role at a club was with Derby County, a role he held only for a year before rejoining Tottenham as chief scout in 2017.
Despite the Spurs squad looking unbalanced, it would appear Hiutchen has little to worry about. It perhaps seems unfair given that Jose Mourinho was sacked for not being able to get the best out of these players.
“There hasn’t been any indication of Spurs appointing a new director of football to replace Steve Hitchen.”
The need of the hour
Ralf Rangnick has been touted as a potential replacement but Gold believes the German is unlikely to step out of his comfort zone in Germany. A visionary, the 62-year-old did a fine job at Hoffenheim before helping transform RB Leipzig into a Bundesliga powerhouse.
“As for Rangnick, I’d be surprised if, in his sixties, he stepped out of his comfort zone of Germany after so many decades there”
The likes of Michael Edwards at Liverpool and Marina Granovksaia at Chelsea have shown what smart recruitment can help a team achieve. More of that needs to be seen at Tottenham if we are serious about being competitive.

Hitchen has at times shown that he has an eye for talent. He helped sign Luka Modric at Spurs before helping land Luis Suarez at Liverpool. Both players are amongst the finest in their generation and reflect well on Hitchen’s eye for talent.
He will however have to step up once again and showcase the same acumen at Tottenham. With us looking set to miss out on Champions League football once again, we cannot afford to concede any more ground on our rivals.
