Transfer News: Manchester City tipped to step up interest in Harry Kane after Pep Guardiola gives striker verdict
Talking in an interview before his team’s game on Sunday (h/t Mirror), Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola gave his verdict on having a prolific striker amid transfer interest in Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane.
And this will reportedly increase City’s interest in the Englishman. Kane has made efforts to push for a move in the summer through his recent comments, and the Citizens are encouraged by it. (h/t Mirror)
Sergio Aguero is set to depart Manchester City after a decade at the club when his contract expires this summer. The Argentine striker will leave a big void in the City attack.
He was largely unavailable this season, with both of City’s top 2 scorers during this campaign being midfielders in Ilkay Gundogan and Phil Foden. And in light of this, Pep has shortlisted Harry Kane and Borussia Dortmund frontman, Erling Haaland. (h/t Mirror)
Citizen Kane?
Both transfers are expected to cost the club over £100m. City have made it clear that they won’t be held to ransom by either clubs, but the Norwegian hitman’s valuation of £140m is not expected to be met.
Guardiola also admitted that he would ‘love’ to have a striker that gets 50 goals in a season, referencing the output of Thierry Henry, Samuel Eto’o, and Lionel Messi at Barcelona.
“I’d love to have a striker who got 50 goals a season, honestly. At the same time, I don’t like to put all the pressure on one player. In Barcelona, Lionel Messi, every season since he was born, scored 50 a season. Thierry Henry scored a lot in the first season and Samuel Eto’o scored a lot – what a striker.”
As for Spurs, it is imperative that they keep their main man. Any rebuild under a new manager next season would be markedly helped by the presence of Kane.
