Transfer News: Man United to incur eye-watering fee to prise away Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur

According to Ian McGarry on the Transfer Window Podcast (h/t Mirror), Man United are expected to double the wages and offer an £18m signing-on fee in order to prise away Tottenham Hotspur striker, Harry Kane.

Kane is not short of suitors, with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City, and Chelsea all linked with a move for him. But Manchester United are thought to be the favourites to sign the Englishman.

Along with the signing fee, Kane’s wages at United are expected to be in the region of £400,000-a-week. If that happens, the club will have to dish out £20.8million each year in the striker’s wages, taking that tally to £104million in the 5-year period.

On top of that, a report by The Athletic (Subscription Required) [h/t Mirror] mentions that a £120m bid would be enough to twist a reluctant Daniel Levy’s arm into parting ways with the 27-year-old.

Kane won’t come cheap

When these figures are added up, the total cost of United signing Kane would go up to £242m. If United pay the aforementioned transfer fee for Kane, that would itself dwarf the previous £89million record sum they paid for Paul Pogba.

United are yet to replace Romelu Lukaku with a true number 9. Anthony Martial had a purple patch last year but is back to his uncertain goal-scoring form this campaign.

In light of this, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be looking to strengthen his transfer line, with McGarry recently also stating that United are the only serious club after Kane.

As for Spurs, there is no doubt that they would themselves have to look in the transfer market to replace Kane – if he leaves. And even then, it seems unlikely that Kane’s numbers and impact on the team can be matched by any newcomer.
