Departing Tottenham star Paulo Gazzaniga a target for Aston Villa
According to the Birmingham Live, soon-to-be free agent Tottenham star Paulo Gazzaniga has emerged as a summer transfer target for Premier League rivals Aston Villa.
The Argentine goalkeeper joined Tottenham in the summer of 2017 from fellow Premier League Southampton. However, he spent the majority of his time at the club acting as an understudy to first-choice custodian and club captain Hugo Lloris.
Gazzaniga dropped further down the pecking order of things at the club when Joe Hart arrived on a free transfer last summer and was axed by then-manager Jose Mourinho from the Europa League squad. Having not featured even once, the 29-year-old secured a loan move to La Liga club Elche during the January transfer window.
During his time in Spain, the 29-year-old managed just eight appearances in which he shipped in nine goals while keeping two clean sheets. (h/t Transfermarkt)
With the campaign over, Gazzaniga’s loan deal ran out and the goalkeeper was back at Tottenham. And the club confirmed earlier on Thursday that the South American ace would be leaving the club when his contract runs out, along with Danny Rose. And soon set to be a free agent, he is now a transfer target for Aston Villa. (h/t Birmingham Live)
The Club can confirm the departures of Danny Rose and Paulo Gazzaniga following the conclusion of their contracts.
We thank Danny and Paulo for their service and wish them well for the future.#THFC ⚪️ #COYS

The Midlands outfit had been interested in signing Gazzaniga last summer prior to bringing in Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa. And with Tom Heaton leaving the club following the expiry of his contract, they are on the lookout for a replacement, with Gazzaniga emerging as a target. It remains to be seen if the ex-Spurs man ends up joining the Premier League club.
