Tottenham dealt transfer blow as Brentford rule out Ivan Toney sale
Speaking to Sky Sports, Brentford’s co-director of football Rasmus Ankerson has ruled out the possibility of a summer exit for star striker and Tottenham Hotspur target Ivan Toney.
Toney signed for Brentford in the summer of 2020 from Peterborough United, coming in as a replacement for Ollie Watkins, who joined Aston Villa. And, the 25-year-old enjoyed a stunning debut season with the Bees, playing a huge role in their promotion to the Premier League for the first-time ever in the history of the club.
Indeed, Toney plundered 31 goals and 10 assists in 45 matches in the regular season in the Championship before scoring two more in the playoffs, to take his overall tally to 33 in 52 games for the season. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Naturally, his performances for Brentford has led to a lot of interest from the Premier League, with Tottenham, along with rivals Arsenal, being linked heavily with a move for the 25-year-old Englishman.
However, now that Brentford have secured promotion to the Premier League via the playoffs, co-director Ankerson has dismissed the possibility of a transfer for Toney, insisting that the striker will stay at the club next season. (h/t Sky Sports)
“Ivan has done amazingly this season and if we hadn’t have gone up then there would have been lots of Premier League interest in him. Obviously now it’s a different situation. We would have had to look at that, but that’s not a new thing for Brentford.
“We have to buy cheap, sell expensive and then reinvest the money into improving the team. It’s not going to be a very different Brentford that we see in the future. Ivan, like he said after the game, can’t wait to start scoring goals in the Premier League. I’m sure that will be for us.”

Tottenham need a new striker in the summer amid question marks over Harry Kane’s future and Carlos Vinicius’ loan spell coming to an end. A move for Toney would, thus, have been quite the ideal scenario. However, having led the Bees to the Premier League, it seems like he will continue with the club for the foreseeable future.
