Transfer News: Tottenham target Sam Johnstone addresses exit rumours
Speaking to i News, West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, who is a transfer target for Tottenham, has responded to speculations surrounding his future.
Johnstone has been with West Brom since 2018, having joined them from Tottenham’s Premier League rivals Manchester United. A permanent fixture in goal ever since, the 28-year-old helped the Baggies to promotion during the 2019/20 season. And even though they were relegated back to the Championship this past season, Johnstone was one of the biggest positives of the season for West Brom.
Now that West Brom have gone down to the second division again and his contract is set to expire in a year, speculations over his future have been doing the rounds quite a bit with Tottenham among the clubs credited with an interest in him. (h/t Metro)
The goalkeeper has responded to the rumours, insisting that his future is in the hands of the club. However, Johnstone has refused to completely rule out an exit from the Hawthorns come summer. (h/t i News)
“I’m still a West Brom player and I’m just looking forward to going away with England, working hard and being proud of the moment. I know there has been a lot of talk about my future but it’s in West Brom’s hands rather than mine so I’ll just put it to the back of my head.
“You never know what can happen in football because it’s a crazy world where things can change quickly. I’ve still got a year left on my contract at West Brom so, as things stands, I’ll be going back there for pre-season.”

Tottenham may need a new goalkeeper this summer as captain Hugo Lloris is also in his final year of his contract. The 34-year-old has showed signs of slowing down in recent years as well. With backup goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga also leaving, and Joe Hart not the right man to assume the No. 1 duties, someone like Johnstone can be a good signing.
However, recent reports have claimed that West Brom will demand £20m for his services, which is a bit excessive. It remains to be seen if the club acts on their interest in the Englishman.
