Transfer News: Tottenham beaten by Swansea City to Kyle Joseph signing
In what is a disappointing bit of news, Tottenham have lost out to Swansea City in the race to sign transfer target Kyle Joseph, with the EFL Championship club confirming a deal for the teenager. (h/t Swansea City official)
Wales Online had reported earlier this month that Tottenham Hotspur were one among a number of clubs interested in signing Joseph from boyhood club Wigan Athletic.
A product of the Wigan youth academy, Joseph had been with the club since 2004. Having made eight appearances for the club’s U-18 outfit, the 19-year-old made his first-team debut in October last year.
Since then, Joseph went on to feature 20 appearances for the Latics in all competitions, finding the back of the net on five occasions while setting up one more goal. (h/t Transfermarkt)
Joseph was out of contract with Wigan Athletic this summer, which had led to widespread interest in his services. The likes of Swansea, Newcastle United, Sheffield United, Preston North End were all keen, along with Celtic and Rangers. And, also on the list of the potential suitors for the teenage forward were Tottenham. (h/t Wales Online)
However, Swansea have now confirmed that they have agreed a deal to sign Joseph from Wigan Athletic for an undisclosed fee, subject to clearance. The statement released by the club read:
“The 19-year-old has agreed a four-year contract at the Liberty Stadium and will become the Swans first signing ahead of the 2021-22 Championship campaign.”

Joseph, given his age and potential, would have been a handy acquisition for Tottenham. Along with the likes of Troy Parrott and Dane Scarlett, the 19-year-old could have formed a potent attacking trio for the future. However, he will now be plying his trade in Wales with the Swans.
