Tottenham join Liverpool in race to sign Lorenzo Pellegrini
According to Il Messaggero (h/t Football.london), Tottenham Hotspur have entered the race to sign AS Roma midfielder and captain Lorenzo Pellegrini, who is a target for Liverpool.
Pellegrini, 24, is a product of the Roma youth academy. Having risen through the ranks, the young midfielder left the club briefly, signing for Sassuolo in 2015 before returning two years later. Since coming back, the Italian has been an ever-present in the centre of the park for the Giallorossi and has racked up 152 appearances, in which he has 21 goals and 34 assists.
Made the club captain last season, Pellegrini enjoyed a fine campaign, finishing with a tally of 11 goals and 9 assists from 47 matches in all competitions. (h/t Transfermarkt)
This has now alerted Tottenham, who are closely watching the 24-year-old but are set to face competition from fellow Premier League rivals Liverpool as per the aforementioned report.
Tottenham could do with a presence like Pellegrini’s in the middle of the park, considering that neither Moussa Sissoko nor Harry Winks offer much in terms of attacking impetus. In addition, with Tanguy Ndombele and Dele Alli blowing hot and cold, the Italian international’s arrival would add more options at the manager’s disposal, as he can play as a No. 8 or a No. 10.

Pellegrini is a player that Paulo Fonseca, soon to be named the Tottenham manager, knows well, having worked with him at Roma the past two years. Whether that helps in Spurs’ attempt to land the Italian international remains to be seen. For now though, they have joined Liverpool in the hunt for the 24-year-old.
