Tottenham want £27m for Steven Bergwijn amid AFC Ajax interest

According to the Daily Mail, reigning Dutch champions AFC Ajax are interested in signing struggling Tottenham star Steven Bergwijn in the summer transfer window.

Bergwijn arrived at Tottenham in January last year from Ajax’s rivals PSV Eindhoven and made an immediate impact at the club, scoring on his debut against Manchester City. The Dutchman then went on to enjoy a productive spell, although his form dipped post lockdown as he finished with three goals and an assist in his 14 league games in 2019/20.

2020/21 though has been nothing short of forgettable for Bergwijn, who struggled to make any notable contributions in attack early on in the season. And eventually, Jose Mourinho, who had backed the 23-year-old during the slump, dropped him from the side and he had since been pretty much out of favour for the rest of the season.

Bergwijn did get a few changes in the last couple of matches under interim boss Ryan Mason, which was when he scored his first and only goal of the season. The Dutch ace finished the campaign with a poor return of just one goal and seven assists from 35 games in all competitions, leaving Harry Kane and Son Heung-min way too much to do in attack.

Bergwijn’s lack of game-time and form led to him missing out from the Netherlands squad for the UEFA Euro 2020. With the FIFA World Cup next year, the 23-year-old wants to get his career back on track, with Ajax now willing to offer him a way out of the club.

Tottenham, as per the report, would want £27m from the Dutch champions for their forward.
