Transfer News: Tottenham star Matt Doherty could be sold in the summer

According to transfer news from The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur could be ready to allow Matt Doherty leave in the summer transfer window should they seal the signing of Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Doherty, 29, arrived at Tottenham only last summer from fellow Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers. Signed to take over as the first-choice right-back from Serge Aurier, the Republic of Ireland international started the campaign as a regular but quickly fell behind the Ivorian in the pecking order after a run of poor displays.

As a result, Doherty managed just 17 Premier League appearances in his debut season with Tottenham, with only 13 of them being from the start. The Irishman did produce a couple of assists but largely looked a pale shadow of himself from his time at Wolves.

Heading into the summer, Tottenham Hotspur are yet to name a manager but the transfer activity seems to be kicking off already, with the club set to sign Takehiro Tomiyasu from Serie A side Bologna. The versatile 22-year-old can play at right-back as well as centre-back, making him a handy acquisition for Tottenham, should a deal go through without any snag. And, as per the report, this could potentially open the doors for the club to let Doherty walk out after what was a hugely disappointing debut season in north London.

While Tomiyasu has the potential to be a good signing for Tottenham, cutting Doherty loose might not be the most prudent option. Especially at a time when the club is also set to lose Serge Aurier.

Moreover, with Nuno Espirito Santo touted to be the next manager of the club, he would know how to get the best out of the Irishman, having done so at Wolves already.
