Tottenham on the verge of appointing Nuno Espirito Santo as new manager
According to The Telegraph, Tottenham Hotspur are poised to name Nuno Espirito Santo as the club’s next manager after closing the interview process for the vacancy.
A long, frustrating wait for a new manager finally seems to be coming to an end. Tottenham have been without a full-time head coach for well over two months now, having sacked Jose Mourinho towards the end of April.
In the aftermath, Ryan Mason saw out the season as interim manager, Tottenham looked for a permanent replacement for Mourinho. A return for Mauricio Pochettino was considered, Antonio Conte was approached after he quit Inter Milan but nothing materialised on that front.
Erik ten Hag had his contract extended at AFC Ajax, leading to talks with Paulo Fonseca, only for them to break down late in the day before Gennaro Gattuso emerged and disappeared as a target in a matter of days. (h/t The Telegraph)
Tottenham then found themselves considering Nuno Espirito Santo as an option for the manager role after he had left Wolves at the end of the 2020/21 season. The Portuguese was also on the radars of Crystal Palace and Everton, while Turkish giants Fenerbahce also held talks over his appointment. However, the 47-year-old remained in talks with Tottenham and is now set to be named the manager.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy and newly-appointed sporting director Fabio Paratici wanted an appointment swiftly rather than waiting till the UEFA Euro 2020 to be over when the possibility of other candidates like Roberto Martinez and Roberto Mancini being available could arise. (h/t The Telegraph)
