Transfer News: Tottenham behind Arsenal in race to sign Aaron Ramsdale
According to transfer news from The Athletic (h/t The Star), Tottenham Hotspur have been left behind by Arsenal in the hunt for the signing of Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.
Ramsdale is a product of the Sheffield United youth academy. Having risen through the ranks, the goalkeeper left for Bournemouth in 2017 before returning to Bramall Lane three years later in 2020.
Having come back to Sheffield United to replace Manchester United loanee Dean Henderson last summer, the 23-year-old found the going tough as the Blades defence was all over the place. Even though Ramsdale emerged with some credit, he wasn’t able to do enough to help the club stave off relegation.
However, Ramsdale, who was called up to the UEFA Euro 2020 as a replacement for the injured Henderson earlier this week, could be set for a swift comeback to the Premier League. Indeed, the goalkeeper has emerged as a target for Tottenham, as reported by the Daily Mail.
But, as per the aforementioned report, it is Arsenal who have now taken the lead in the race for the 23-year-old Englishman. The Gunners are already said to have made “initial contact” with Sheffield United to explore the possibility of signing Ramsdale, leaving Spurs trailing. (h/t The Star)
Tottenham do need a new goalkeeper as a succession plan needs to be put in place for long-serving captain Hugo Lloris. The 34-year-old is entering the final stages of his career, while his contract with the club also runs out in a year.

Ramsdale, despite having seen back-to-back relegations with Bournemouth and Sheffield United, has shown his pedigree in the Premier League. However, it seems like Tottenham may end up missing out on the 23-year-old.
