Transfer News: Tottenham interested in Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma
According to French outlet Telefoot (h/t Metro), Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing French defender Kurt Zouma from London rivals Chelsea in the ongoing transfer window.
Zouma joined Chelsea in 2014 when Jose Mourinho was in charge at the club. It was the Portuguese who handed him his first-team debut at Stamford Bridge. However, injuries hampered his development, which meant he ended up losing his place in the starting lineup.
As a result, the 26-year-old spent the two seasons out on loan at Stoke City and Everton, particularly impressing during his spell at Goodison Park. Back at Chelsea ahead of the 2019/20 term, the Frenchman started the season as the first-choice but eventually lost his place.
He has been in and out of the starting XI ever since, with the case being the same in the 2020/21 term, be it under Frank Lampard or his successor Thomas Tuchel, who took over in January earlier this year. In fact, the German has stuck by the trio of Cesar Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva and Antonio Rudiger as his preferred options with Andreas Christensen as the backup.
As a result, Zouma is expected to be on his way out Chelsea, this summer, with his potential availability alerting Tottenham.
It is no secret that Spurs are eyeing defensive reinforcements before next season, with a shortlist of five top candidates identified. (h/t Express)
In case the club fails to sign any of those, though, Zouma wouldn’t be the worst option to look at considering that he is experienced in the Premier League, has exposure to European football and his best years are well ahead of him.

Convincing him to make the switch could be an issue, though, as former manager Mourinho also wants to sign him at AS Roma this summer. In addition to that, Everton have also shown an interest, as did Wolves, but were shot down by the Frenchman. It remains to be seen if Tottenham decide to act on their interest in Zouma or stick to their five shortlisted options.
