Transfer News: Tottenham start negotiations to sign Pierluigi Gollini
According to transfer news from Sky Sport Italia (h/t Metro), Tottenham Hotspur have opened talks with Atalanta to sign Pierluigi Gollini in the ongoing summer window.
Gollini started out at the academy of SPAL and spent a couple of years with the Fiorentina youth setup as well before arriving in England in 2012, signing for Manchester United. After two years with the Red Devils’ youth teams, the goalkeeper returned to Italy, signing for Hellas Verona in 2014.
Two years later, Gollini would return to England, signing for Aston Villa in 2016 but the move did not go as per plans as the shot-stopper was back in Italy just six months later, signing for Atalanta on an eighteen-month loan deal, before making the transfer permanent in 2018. Since then, he has been a regular in goal for La Dea, making 112 appearances in which he has 38 clean sheets.
Gollini has also managed to break into the Italian national team, accumulating a single cap for the Azzurri. However, following the arrival of Juan Musso this summer at Atalanta, his future at the club has been cast into doubts. And, it seems like the Serie A outfit are more than happy to cash in on him this summer, piquing the interest of Tottenham. (h/t Metro)
Spurs are in the market for a new long-term replacement for Hugo Lloris, who is in the final phase of his career and the last year of his contract with the club. Gollini, to that end, has been identified as a potential heir for the Frenchman. And talks over a transfer already underway, with Spurs negotiating an initial loan deal with an option to buy. A loan deal with an option to buy seems a good move for Tottenham, considering that the club can get a closer look at Gollini before investing him on a permanent basis. It now remains to be seen whether the move sees the light of the day.
